The Seme Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) hosted its maiden media briefing yesterday, detailing key achievements in revenue generation, trade facilitation, anti-smuggling operations, and inter-agency collaboration. Dr. Ben Oramalugo, the Area Controller, emphasized the importance of these accomplishments since his assumption of office on February 11, 2025.
To enhance operations, the Command has implemented strategic restructuring, redeploying officers for heightened vigilance and accountability. Recognizing the value of strong partnerships, the Area Controller engaged with stakeholders, including traditional rulers and security agencies, fostering better intelligence-sharing to enhance border security and promote seamless trade.
Some of the seized items
In February 2025, the Seme Area Command reported generating ₦743.7 million, reflecting its commitment to blocking revenue leakages. Additionally, the Command facilitated the export of over 28,000 metric tonnes of produce, valued at ₦7.85 billion (equivalent to $4.99 million). The Nigeria Export Supervision Scheme (NESS) fees totaled ₦39.26 million.
A rigorous anti-smuggling campaign led to the interception of contraband items, including 444 parcels of cannabis, 181 packs of tramadol, 600 bottles of codeine syrup, and 1,809 bags of foreign parboiled rice. These seizures had a Duty Paid Value (DPV) of ₦267 million. Seized cannabis was handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) as part of ongoing inter-agency collaboration.
Dr. Oramalugo reaffirmed the Command’s determination to enhance community engagement, intelligence strategies, and surveillance to combat smuggling and foster legitimate trade. He issued a stern warning to smugglers, urging them to desist from economic sabotage and contribute to national growth.
The Area Controller expressed gratitude to the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, and his management team for their support. He also acknowledged the dedication of officers, inter-agency partners, and the media for their role in promoting the Command’s activities.
The briefing highlighted the Seme Area Command’s commitment to operational excellence and national development, with a promise of sustained efforts in the coming months.
