In a bold move to combat corruption and unprofessional conduct within Nigeria’s ports, the National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF) has called for an investigation into a specific officer( names withheld), at the Maritime Police Command in Obalende, Lagos. The officer in question has been accused of corrupt practices and indiscipline, which have reportedly gone unchecked for over three years.

Alhaji Tanko Ibrahim, Head of Compliance at NAGAFF, in a press statement,today,7 August,2024,has formally addressed the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Finance, urging them to investigate the officer’s activities. NAGAFF has expressed its readiness to provide material evidence to support their claims.

The association has highlighted the officer’s repeated issuance of stoppage letters to terminal operators and shipping companies, disrupting port operations. Despite several interventions by the Nigeria Customs Service and the Nigeria Shippers Council, the officer has continued his alleged misconduct.

NAGAFF’s statement emphasizes the association’s commitment to identifying and addressing corruption within various government agencies posted at entry points. They believe that exposing such corrupt practices is crucial to supporting the federal government’s efforts to improve Nigeria’s economic conditions.

The letter, signed by Alhaji Tanko Ibrahim, National Coordinator, NAGAFF 100% Compliance,has been distributed to key government officials, including the Senate President, the Chief of Staff to the President, the Secretary to the Federal Government, the Comptroller General of Customs, and the Inspector General of Police. NAGAFF hopes that a thorough investigation by the IGP Monitoring Unit will serve as a deterrent to other corrupt officers within government agencies.
NAGAFF calls on all Nigerians to respect and obey the rule of law, highlighting that the problem is not solely about President Bola Ahmed Tinubu or state governments, but about the collective responsibility of the Nigerian people.
In the maritime sector, Alhaji Tanko stresses the importance of adhering to import and export regulations and condemns any form of extortion by government officers at ports. The National Coordinator, NAGAFF 100% Compliance, asserts that the heads of government agencies and parastatals have not instructed their officers to engage in corrupt practices.

He asserted that the compliance team is prepared to collaborate with the federal government, Nigeria Customs, and the Nigeria Police to ensure best practices at customs ports and border stations. The NAGAFF underscores the necessity of collective courage and will to confront corruption and urges government agents to protect the interests of the government and society.
As a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Tanko Ibrahim has expressed his determination to ensure that the efforts to make Nigeria a better place are not sabotaged by corrupt practices within the police force.
NAGAFF looks forward to a prompt response from the Inspector General of Police and remains committed to escalating any acts of corruption that undermine the federal government’s initiatives.
