The President-General of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, has reaffirmed the Union’s commitment to workers’ welfare and strong industry collaboration during a courtesy visit from the Managing Director of GMT Shipping Company, Mr. Tim Maguire.

The meeting, which held at the MWUN Secretariat on Osho Drive, Olodi Apapa, Lagos, was described as a goodwill visit by the GMT MD, who congratulated Comrade Bunu on his recent election victory and expressed GMT’s continued solidarity with the Union’s leadership.

Mr. Maguire, a long-time ally of the MWUN, lauded Comrade Bunu’s track record as a seasoned labour leader and maritime expert. He praised the new MWUN PG as a man of integrity and professionalism whose dedication to the maritime industry precedes his new role. Maguire emphasized GMT’s intention to strengthen its enduring relationship with the Union under Bunu’s leadership.

In his remarks, Comrade Bunu, a veteran sailor and administrator from Delta State, thanked Mr. Maguire for his visit and described GMT as a reliable partner in progress. He assured the MD that the mutually beneficial relationship between MWUN and GMT would not only continue but grow stronger, provided the company maintains its worker-friendly policies.

“The Union will always stand by companies that prioritize workers’ welfare,” Comrade Bunu stated. “However, we will not hesitate to resist any company that treats its workers unfairly. Workers are the backbone of this industry, and as a Union, we must protect them at all times.”

He reiterated the Union’s zero tolerance for worker exploitation, noting that companies that shortchange or marginalize workers’ welfare would not be entertained by the Union. At the same time, he stressed that discipline remains a core principle within MWUN, and workers are expected to uphold the highest standards of duty.

The visit marks a renewed commitment between MWUN and GMT to collaborate for the sustained growth and harmony within the maritime sector.
