MWUN Condemns Negligence in Recent Boat Mishap, Applauds NIWA’s Proactive Respons

The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has expressed deep regret over the tragic boat mishap that occurred on October 7, 2024, at Imore, Lagos State. The accident involved a fibre boat operated by ONLY GOD MARINE LTD, which veered off its designated channel and collided with a wooden passenger boat. Preliminary investigations indicate that the captain’s obstructed vision due to heavy cargo and negligence in adhering to safety regulations were significant factors in the incident.

MWUN extends heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and wishes the injured a swift recovery. The union has confirmed that arrests have been made, and prosecutions are expected to follow promptly.

In a statement,signed by the President General of the Union ,Comrade Prince Adewale Adeyanju Fnli,MWUN commended the Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Mr. Bola Oyebamiji, for his swift intervention, which facilitated the rescue of some victims and ensured prompt medical treatment for the injured. Mr. Oyebamiji’s decisive actions in the immediate aftermath of the incident have been widely recognized and appreciated.

The union also praised NIWA’s commitment to holding those responsible accountable, viewing this as a deterrent to future negligence. MWUN highlighted Mr. Oyebamiji’s vision for enhancing safety on Nigeria’s waterways, particularly through initiatives like the NIWA River Marshall, aimed at improving security and safety on coastal waters.

However, MWUN emphasized that more needs to be done to prevent such accidents. The union called for improved monitoring of boat operators, regular channelling of coastal waters, better lighting, and the constant removal of wrecks. They urged the Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, to provide NIWA with the necessary resources to enforce safety regulations more effectively.

MWUN hopes that this tragedy will inspire all stakeholders to prioritize safety on Nigeria’s waterways, ensuring that such incidents are minimized in the future.
