Maritime Journalists Form Umbrella Body, NNMJ, To Foster Unity , Stronger Industry Engagement

The Nigerian maritime media community has taken a bold step toward unity with the official unveiling of the Network of Nigerian Maritime Journalists (NNMJ), a coalition designed to serve as an umbrella body for all maritime journalists across the country.

The NNMJ, according to its leadership, is a strategic move aimed at fostering cohesion among journalists covering the maritime sector, while also building stronger collaboration with government agencies, parastatals, and other critical stakeholders in the industry.

Membership of the network cuts across all existing maritime journalists’ associations, including the League of Maritime Editors (LEAGUE), Maritime Association of Nigeria (MARAN), Maritime Journalists’ Association of Nigeria (MAJAN), Shipping Correspondents Association of Nigeria (SCAN), Online Media Association of Nigeria (OMAN), and the Congress of Nigerian Maritime Media Practitioners (CONMMEP), as well as independent maritime reporters not affiliated with any group.

Speaking on the development,in a statement jointly signed by the Chairman, Elder Dele Aderibigbe,and the Public Relations Officer of the group, Mr Jerry Agugbo,NNMJ explained that the coalition became necessary to give maritime journalists a stronger, unified platform that would not only enhance industry coverage but also uplift the welfare and recognition of practitioners.
“Maritime journalists have over the years been fragmented and, at times, treated like orphans within the industry. The NNMJ seeks to change this narrative by ensuring unity, dignity, and a louder voice for practitioners,” Aderibigbe said.
Also, the group’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Jerry Aguigbo, noted that the NNMJ would soon roll out its programmes and initiatives, calling on all stakeholders to support the coalition for its success.
The network extended appreciation to maritime journalists for their loyalty and commitment, while also commending stakeholders who have supported the profession over the years.
The NNMJ is expected to serve as a rallying point for improved collaboration between the media and maritime industry players, ensuring seamless industry coverage and greater professional cohesion.
