A fresh twist has emerged in the ongoing leadership crisis rocking the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), as the party’s National Secretary, Comrade Oginni Olaposi Sunday, has launched a scathing attack on Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, accusing him of betrayal, greed, and attempted political hijack.
In a statement released on Wednesday in Abuja, Comrade Sunday expressed deep concern over what he described as Kwankwaso’s “avoidable circumstances” and “political dilemma,” alleging that the former Kano State Governor tried to convert the NNPP into his personal estate by making unilateral decisions without the consent of the party’s founder, Dr. Boniface Okechukwu Aniebonam.
“Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso is at the moment regretting his actions,” the statement read. “His attempt to change the party’s logo, slogan, colour, and symbols without the consent of the founder is nothing short of betrayal and political theft.”
Sunday accused Kwankwaso of using surrogates to orchestrate the expulsion of Dr. Aniebonam, despite the latter’s status as Chairman and life member of the party’s Board of Trustees. More shocking, according to the statement, was Kwankwaso’s reported move to jail the founder by filing Forms 48 and 49 against him in a Kano High Court.
“This is a cruel and wicked attempt by a man who was given a golden opportunity to become the presidential candidate of NNPP in 2023 at no cost,” Sunday said.
The statement also pointed to Kwankwaso’s long history in Nigerian politics, noting that despite holding various prominent positions—including governor, senator, and minister—he had never secured a presidential ticket until joining the NNPP in 2022.
Comrade Sunday further alleged that Kwankwaso has become politically stranded following the dismissal of a court case related to the party’s deregistration, and blamed the senator’s legal team for misleading him while “extorting millions” from him through what he described as “incompetent cases.”
“Kwankwaso has never even seen the original certificate of NNPP’s registration, yet he continues to claim ownership,” he added. “This is the height of desperation.”
In a final jab, Sunday appealed to the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, to come to Kwankwaso’s aid as the embattled politician reportedly seeks a return to the APC.
The NNPP, originally registered in 2002, has been plunged into internal strife since Kwankwaso’s entry into the party in 2022. The fallout continues to generate legal and political ripples across Nigeria’s political landscape.
