Ports & Cargo Makes History with Arrival Of Largest General Cargo Vessel At Tin Can Island Port

Ports & Cargo Handling Services Limited, a subsidiary of SIFAX Group, has achieved a significant operational milestone with the arrival of IPSARION, the largest general cargo vessel ever handled at its terminal at Tin Can Island Port, Lagos.

The Malta-flagged bulk carrier, measuring an impressive 199.99 meters in length and with a gross tonnage of 36,560, berthed at the terminal loaded with a diverse range of cargo including construction equipment, steel rods, vehicles, chemicals, and power generation machinery. The vessel, built by Tsuneishi Heavy Industries in Cebu, Philippines, is managed by Helikon Shipping Enterprises Ltd and operated by YAKE BULK LIMITED.

Describing the vessel’s call as a landmark achievement, Managing Director of Ports & Cargo Handling Services Limited, Mr. John Jenkins, said the development aligns with the company’s strategic push to diversify its cargo handling operations beyond container traffic.

“For a long period of time, our terminal has been servicing primarily container vessels, but a strategic business decision recently that borders on opening up the space for more diverse business partnerships has tilted us towards welcoming general cargo vessels,” Jenkins explained.

He added that while general cargo operations are not entirely new to the company, the arrival of IPSARION highlights the terminal’s upgraded capacity and operational readiness. “We have the expertise, equipment and other resources to adequately meet and exceed the expectations of general cargo vessels calling at our terminal,” he said.

Unloading operations for IPSARION are currently underway, with Mr. Jenkins noting that the vessel’s successful handling showcases the terminal’s preparedness for high-volume cargo operations. “It validates the massive investment SIFAX Group has made in port infrastructure and human capacity over the years,” he added.

This development is seen as another bold step in reinforcing SIFAX Group’s commitment to excellence in Nigeria’s maritime sector and its role in fostering economic growth through efficient and diversified port operations.
