The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has applauded the management of Orion Marine Services Limited and Seatransport Ltd for implementing a fresh salary increment for their seafarers in line with the National Joint Industrial Council (NJIC) agreement.

The Union’s President-General, Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, described the move as unprecedented and a demonstration of the companies’ commitment to workers’ welfare. He noted that the increment reflects total compliance with the NJIC work book, which stipulates improved remuneration for Nigerian seafarers.

Bunu, who signed the NJIC agreement on behalf of MWUN, commended both companies for prioritizing the welfare of their employees. “It is only when workers are happy that employers can record optimum productivity and satisfaction,” he said.

The MWUN leader further urged other maritime operators to emulate the gesture, stressing that Orion and Seatransport are operating within the same industry conditions as others. He warned that companies that fail to comply with the NJIC provisions would face union sanctions and be reported to the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).

Both Orion Marine and Seatransport, located in Apapa, Lagos, were lauded by the Union as examples of responsible management in the nation’s maritime sector.John Kennedy Ikemefuna,Head of Media of the MWUN, signed the press statement.
