MWUN, Melsmore Marine Open Dialogue Over Workers’ Welfare Dispute

In a significant move towards resolving an ongoing industrial dispute, the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has opened truce talks with the management of Melsmore Marine Nigeria Limited, following a previously issued 21-day ultimatum over workers’ welfare concerns.

The Union, led by Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, had earlier threatened industrial action over Melsmore’s alleged failure to provide its employees with a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and relevant Pension Fund Administration (PFA) remittance records. The ultimatum was issued through the office of the Union’s Secretary-General, Comrade Oniha Erazua.

However, recent developments suggest a positive shift in the standoff. According to a statement signed by Comrade John Kennedy Ikemefuna, Head of Media for MWUN, both parties have entered into meaningful dialogue aimed at finding a “lasting solution” to the dispute.

“The leadership of the Union are already in positive talks with Melsmore management to find a mutual understanding and benefits for both organisations,” the statement read. “Most importantly, the focus remains on the welfare of our members, who are bonafide employees of Melsmore Marine Nigeria Limited.”

Meetings between MWUN and Melsmore are said to be ongoing and still in the developmental stage. As a sign of good faith and commitment to dialogue, the Union has lifted the 21-day ultimatum previously issued to the company.

The truce talks are being held at Melsmore Marine’s headquarters located at Choscharis Plaza, 68A Adeola Odeku, Victoria Island, Lagos.

Observers within the maritime sector view this de-escalation as a welcome development, noting that collaborative dispute resolution ensures industrial harmony and protects the rights of workers while allowing business operations to continue without disruption.
