The President-General of the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, led a delegation of the Union’s newly elected executive officers on a courtesy visit to the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, at the Authority’s Marina Headquarters in Lagos on Wednesday.

According to Comrade John Kennedy Ikemefuna, Head of Media,, of the Union, the visit was aimed at strengthening ties between MWUN and the NPA leadership, as both institutions play critical and complementary roles in the nation’s maritime sector.

Comrade Bunu noted that it was important for the new MWUN executives to familiarize themselves with the NPA management team, emphasizing that synergy between labour and the Authority remains key to achieving meaningful progress.

“The Union and the Ports Authority are partners in progress in the maritime sector; we cannot work in isolation,” Bunu said. “This visit is necessary to acquaint ourselves with each other and reaffirm our commitment to supporting the growth of the Nigerian maritime industry.”

During the meeting, the MWUN leadership also extended their congratulations to Dr. Dantsoho on Nigeria’s recent election into the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Category ‘C’ Council seat. Comrade Bunu praised the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Honourable Adegboyega Oyetola, for securing the victory, describing it as a monumental achievement for the country and a major step forward for the maritime sector.

He lauded the development as “a bold and fruitful milestone that will enhance Nigeria’s visibility, influence, and advancement within the global maritime community.”

In his response, Dr. Dantsoho expressed appreciation for the visit and commended the MWUN leadership for its continued cooperation. He assured the delegation of NPA’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with the Union to further develop the nation’s ports and enhance operational efficiency.

He pledged continual synergy with MWUN, noting that such partnership is essential to positioning Nigeria’s maritime industry as a vibrant hub of economic activity both locally and internationally.

The visit was accompanied by expressions of mutual respect and reaffirmed commitment to collective progress within the sector.
