Maritime Workers Union Of Nigeria Resuscitates Seven-Day Ultimatum Over Unpaid Salaries

The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has issued a renewed seven-day ultimatum to the Council for the Regulation of Freight Forwarding in Nigeria (CRFFN) over the non-payment of staff salaries.
This ultimatum follows reports that the management of CRFFN has once again halted salary payments to MWUN members employed by the Council, citing a change in leadership as the cause.
In a press release, MWUN expressed its appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointing a new Registrar/CEO for CRFFN, based on the recommendation of the Honourable Minister of Marine & Blue Economy, Alhaji Isiaka Adegboyega Oyetola.
The Union had previously commended the Minister for facilitating a bail-out bond that helped pay part of the nine months’ salary arrears owed to the workers.
However, the Union now faces a setback as the payment of staff salaries has been stopped, leaving employees in a state of uncertainty. Reports indicate that workers are owed several months of arrears, with no resolution in sight.
MWUN had hoped that the appointment of a substantive Registrar/CEO would prevent further agitation for workers’ rights. Unfortunately, the Union reports a leadership vacuum at CRFFN, which is negatively impacting its members.
MWUN emphasized that its focus remains on ensuring that its members are not victimized by any management disputes or irregularities.
The Union has therefore resuscitated its earlier suspended seven-day ultimatum, demanding that CRFFN management pay all outstanding salaries within this period.
Failure to comply will result in MWUN taking action to defend its members’ rights, which may include withdrawing their services across all seaports, terminals, jetties, and oil and gas platforms.
