The Igbo Community of South Australia will gather this Wednesday, 23rd July, for a solemn candlelight vigil in honour of the late Mr. Victor Ikechukwu Umeh, a well-known and beloved member of the Nigerian community in Adelaide.

Mr. Umeh, who had been residing in South Australia for several years, tragically lost his life during a recent visit to Nigeria. He was reportedly shot and killed by unknown gunmen while reconnecting with family and loved ones.

In an effort to celebrate his life and mourn his untimely death, members of the community will convene at the Holy Cross Catholic Church in Goodwood at 6:00 PM. The vigil is expected to draw a large crowd, including friends, family, and members of the broader Nigerian and multicultural community.

Speaking on behalf of the Igbo Community of South Australia, Public Relations Officer Nnaemeka Kevin Umenzeakor expressed deep sorrow over the loss and called for a strong turnout at the memorial.

“This will be a special moment for us to pay our last respects and stand in solidarity as a community. We must come together not only to mourn but also to honour the memory of a man who meant so much to so many,” Umenzeakor said.

Attendees are encouraged to wear black as a symbol of collective mourning. The event will also be covered by News Corp Australia/The Advertiser and The Southern Cross newspaper, reflecting the impact of Mr. Umeh’s life and the depth of community grief.

Mr. Umeh’s death has sparked conversations among diaspora communities about safety during visits to Nigeria and the emotional toll of violence back home. As mourners gather this week, the vigil will serve not only as a farewell but also as a call for peace, unity, and reflection.
