The 2024 maiden edition of the Students Entrepreneurial Development Seminar (SEDS) convened at the Rockview Hotel in Apapa, Lagos, on Thursday, June 27th. The seminar, organized by News Emperor Magazine, aimed to revolutionize the marine and blue economy sector by fostering entrepreneurship among Nigerian maritime students.

Theme: “Building Capacity and Entrepreneurial Spirit Among Nigerian Students To Harness The Potentials of Marine and Blue Economy”
The theme underscored the urgent need for diversification in Nigeria’s economy, moving beyond heavy reliance on oil production. While Nigeria ranks sixth globally in oil production, attention has shifted toward exploring other economic avenues, particularly the abundant marine and blue economy resources.

Nigeria’s Maritime Potential
Nigeria boasts an extensive coastline of approximately 852 kilometers along the Atlantic Ocean in the Gulf of Guinea (GOG). Its maritime area spans over 46,000 square kilometers, encompassing mangroves, swamps, creeks, coastal rivers, bays, and offshore waters. Eleven coastal states – including Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Edo, Imo, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, and Rivers – share this coastline.

Despite these abundant resources, Nigeria has yet to fully tap into its maritime potential. The marine and blue economy sector remains largely untapped, hindering economic growth and development.

Empowering Nigerian Youths
Pastor Ambrose Obioma Kindness Okehi emphasized the importance of capacity building and entrepreneurial spirit among Nigerian youths. He urged participants to embrace a changed mindset, develop interest, and seize the entrepreneurial opportunities within the marine and blue economy. By doing so, they can become viable contributors to the nation’s economic prosperity.

The seminar featured guest speakers who delved into various aspects of entrepreneurship, marine resource utilization, and sustainable practices. Attendees left inspired and equipped to play an active role in shaping Nigeria’s maritime future.

As the SEDS concluded, participants expressed optimism about the transformative impact of entrepreneurship on Nigeria’s blue economy. The event marked a significant step toward harnessing the potentials of the marine sector and empowering the next generation of maritime leaders.
