By Frank Odinukaeze
Born in Ugheli, Delta State in 1933, Comptroller Joseph F. Brigue’s journey is a testament to dedication, education, and faith. Starting his education at Government College Ugheli, he graduated in 1956 and joined the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) on September 1st of the same year. His career in customs saw a steady rise, culminating in his promotion to Comptroller in 1978.
As the first Controller of the Customs Training College, Brigue played a pivotal role in training and staff development. He was instrumental in the relocation of the Training College from Harvey Road to Ikeja and was a pioneer instructor, teaching preventive officers the technical aspects of service operations. Notably, he mentored many, including former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. His tenure at the Tincan Island Port Command from 1982 to 1984 marked the end of his illustrious career in customs, retiring voluntarily in March 1986.
Brigue’s quest for knowledge led him to the University of Lagos, where he studied Law from 1976 to 1981, followed by six months at law school. His life took a spiritual turn in April 1977 when he embraced Christianity, becoming a staunch member of the Foursquare Gospel Church. In 1985, he joined the church’s highest organ and received a divine vision to build a bridge for those suffering. This vision led him to seminary school, where he earned a Bachelor of Theology and planted a church in Ajegunle, Lagos, serving as a pastor for 14 years before passing the mantle to a younger leader in 2012.
Married to Mrs. Philomena Brigue since December 27, 1955, the couple has eight children. Brigue is a prolific author, having written eight books, including one about Alhaji MKO Abiola in 1993. His primary source of income is his pension from the NCS. Known for his wisdom, he advises, “Go there and make a career so that you can finish well. Have a good heart. Don’t be lazy. Don’t steal to plan your life. Plan to plan your life.”
Comptroller J F. Brigue’s life is a remarkable blend of public service, continuous learning, and unwavering faith, leaving a lasting legacy in both the customs service and his Comptroller Brigue ( Rtd), was the first Substantive Customs Area Administrator,Tin Can port Command,NCS.
