Better Days Ahead For MWUN, Says PG Comrade Bunu

The President-General of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, has assured members of the union of brighter days ahead, declaring that “a new dawn” has begun under his leadership.
Bunu gave the assurance on Thursday while hosting executive members of the Maritime Journalists Association of Nigeria (MAJAN) at the MWUN secretariat in Apapa.
“I want to assure the union members that better things are coming. They should have trust in the union leaders. MWUN is ready to resolve any issue affecting members in their workplace,” he said.
The MWUN helmsman also appealed to members to stay away from drugs, theft, and violence, urging them to let their love for the union grow stronger. “Don’t steal. Don’t fight. Don’t take drugs. Do your job and let your love for the union keep waxing stronger,” he advised.
According to him, lack of trust remains one of the major challenges confronting trade unionism in Nigeria. He encouraged members to have faith in their leaders, stressing that “the worst trade union is better than no union.”

Bunu further underscored the importance of mutual encouragement between union leaders and members.
Meanwhile, he commended the Lagos State Director of the State Security Service (DSS), Babajide Adisa, for his critical role in resolving disputes at the recently unionised Melsmore Marine Limited. Describing Adisa as “one of the most truthful DSS officers” he has encountered, Bunu praised his courage in telling foreign operators when they were wrong.
“For a trade union to appreciate the security service, it means a lot. He has done very well, and that is the truth,” Bunu said.
Recalling his early days in office after taking over from Comrade Adewale Adeyanju, Bunu noted that his swift start was made possible by his long experience in the system — rising from the bottom of the ladder to Deputy President-General before assuming the top position.
He reaffirmed his executive’s commitment to improving members’ welfare and taking the union to greater heights.
In his remarks, MAJAN President Jerry Aguigbo lauded Bunu’s prompt actions and achievements within a short time in office, assuring that MAJAN would continue to support MWUN and work towards the advancement of Nigeria’s maritime industry.
