Nigeria Customs Warns Travellers On US VISA Misuse,Cash Disclosure,Conduct Abroad

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has issued a strong advisory to Nigerian travellers regarding the responsible use of United States visas, warning that misuse could lead to visa revocation and possible legal consequences.
In a press statement signed by Dr. Abdullahi Maiwada, Assistant Comptroller of Customs and National Public Relations Officer, the NCS cautioned that visa vetting by US authorities does not end upon arrival. Instead, visa holders are subject to ongoing monitoring, and violations of US immigration laws, import/export regulations, or criminal activity may result in revocation of entry privileges.
“Nigerians must understand that misuse of US entry visas—especially for purposes not aligned with the visa classification—can attract serious penalties,” the statement noted.
Customs also reminded travellers of the mandatory declaration of funds exceeding $10,000 or its equivalent when entering or exiting Nigeria. Failure to do so, the NCS warned, may constitute a breach of international travel and financial regulations.
“Travellers are urged to ensure that their baggage does not contain prohibited items and that their conduct both within and outside Nigeria remains exemplary,” the statement added. “Fraud or any form of criminal conduct in any jurisdiction will not go unpunished.”
The NCS further disclosed that it is working closely with the US Mission in Abuja to ensure Nigeria is not added to any expanded visa ban lists—a move that could hinder lawful travel by genuine Nigerian businesspeople and other citizens.
The Customs Service emphasized its commitment to protecting the integrity of Nigeria’s international image and urged all citizens to support this goal by adhering to travel guidelines and laws.
The statement serves as a timely reminder amidst growing global concerns over visa integrity and immigration compliance.
