SEREC Hails CGC Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, Urges Balanced Policy Direction

The Sea Empowerment and Research Center (SEREC) has extended a warm congratulatory message to the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, lauding the remarkable milestones achieved under his leadership in the past two years.
In a statement signed by Fwdr Eugene Nweke, a renowned freight forwarding expert and Head of Research at SEREC, the organization commended Adeniyi for instituting a result-driven, people-oriented, and innovative leadership style that has transformed the operations of the Customs Service.
SEREC specifically highlighted the impressive revenue growth from ₦3.2 trillion in 2023 to ₦6.105 trillion in 2024, describing it as a “testament to effective policy direction, aggressive revenue drive, and improved enforcement mechanisms.” The group also praised the ongoing efforts to improve officers’ welfare and the adoption of modern technology in Customs operations.
However, SEREC’s message was not without caution. While acknowledging the critical importance of revenue generation to national development, the organization advised the CGC to remain attentive to the broader economic implications of Customs policies.
“We urge you to remain focused on ensuring that the manufacturing and exporting sectors are not stifled, and that cargo throughput continues to grow,” the statement read. “The inflationary pressures currently affecting the Nigerian economy also require careful policy balancing.”
SEREC also advised the CGC to avoid overreliance on media accolades and instead remain committed to a holistic approach that fosters both fiscal efficiency and a conducive trade environment.
“The role of the Nigeria Customs Service in balancing the nation’s trade and commercial framework cannot be overstated. With your continued leadership, we are optimistic that Customs will deliver even greater value to Nigeria,” the statement added.
SEREC concluded by reaffirming its support for the Customs boss and expressed optimism that the Service would maintain its upward trajectory in service delivery, trade facilitation, and national development.
Bashir Adewale Adeniyi was appointed Comptroller General of Customs in 2023 and has since been credited with several transformative reforms across the Service.
