MWUN Mourns Passing Of Comrade Ayo Ohiwereh, Hails His Legacy

The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Comrade Ayo Ohiwereh, a respected former member whose funeral was held in London last Saturday. The burial, which was streamed via Zoom, was solemnly observed by the Union’s officials and members, who gathered to pay their last respects virtually.
In an earlier show of solidarity, the Union’s leadership, led by President-General Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, had visited the deceased’s family at their Fesrac residence in Lagos, extending heartfelt condolences before the final rites in the United Kingdom.
Describing the late Comrade Ayo as a “diligent man” and “astute administrator,” Comrade Bunu reflected on his contributions to the Union and the broader maritime labor movement. He praised Ayo’s unwavering commitment to the development of effective Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBA), citing his instrumental role in the Maritime Affiliate Support (MAS) project, which helped strengthen CBA frameworks in Nigeria.
“Comrade Ayo was a man of vision and service — filled with courage, hope, and the fruitfulness of action,” said Comrade Bunu. “He left an indelible mark on the Union with his attention to detail and leadership style focused on purpose-driven people management.”
Ayo Ohiwereh, who hailed from Edo State, was well-educated in both Nigeria and the UK. He also served with distinction at the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) in London, collaborating closely with MWUN. His character — described as loving, magnanimous, humorous, and rarely offended — earned him admiration and respect from colleagues and comrades alike.
Comrade Ayo will be fondly remembered by the maritime community for his selfless service and cheerful spirit. MWUN joins his family and loved ones in mourning this great loss.
