Nokia To Equip Maersk’s Global Fleet With Private Wireless Network

Global shipping leader Maersk has announced a landmark partnership with Nokia to deploy private wireless networks across 450 vessels in its fleet, marking a major step forward in maritime digital transformation.

The collaboration is a key component of Maersk’s new digital connectivity platform, OneWireless, which aims to revolutionize cargo tracking, enhance supply chain transparency, and boost operational efficiency through advanced connectivity at sea.

According to Nokia, the shift to private wireless will allow Maersk to overcome the limitations of its existing onboard infrastructure and offer a scalable, future-ready communications network. The solution will cover both Maersk-owned containerships and over 100 time-chartered vessels, providing comprehensive, vessel-wide connectivity.

“By transitioning to Nokia’s private wireless technology, Maersk will overcome the challenges of its current infrastructure onboard both its own and chartered vessels and gain access to increased scalability and future-proof connectivity,” Nokia stated.

Currently, Maersk’s customers can monitor the temperature of refrigerated (reefer) cargo, but the company says the existing 2G network limits the frequency of updates. The new 4G-based solution promises more granular data and enables real-time insights, laying the groundwork for smarter cargo tracking and enhanced fleet operations.

“This platform is designed to support thousands of IoT devices, ensuring optimal performance for reefer tracking and fleet IoT,” said Kjeld Dittmann, Head of Vessel and Cargo Connectivity at Maersk.

The OneWireless rollout is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2026. Alongside Nokia, Maersk is working with technology partners including Onomondo, 42com Sat, Complea, and Zededa to deliver this ambitious upgrade.
