The President-General of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Comrade Prince Francis Bunu Abi, has praised Nigerian workers for their unwavering resilience and dedication, especially in the face of current economic and industrial challenges.
In a May Day message released through the union’s Head of Media, Comrade John Kennedy Ikemefuna, Bunu commended workers for their steadfast commitment to nation-building despite the harsh economic realities. He described Nigerian workers as the driving force behind the country’s industrial and economic progress.
“I will keep urging the Nigerian worker to keep the flag flying. There is dignity in labour, and your hands’ diligent work will eventually speak for you, wherever you may find yourself,” he said. “For sure, a diligent workman will not go unrewarded.”
Bunu called on workers across all sectors to stand tall and continue demanding their legitimate rights. He emphasized that perseverance and professionalism would eventually compel the government to respond positively to workers’ demands.
Acknowledging the vital role of maritime workers, the seasoned maritime expert and sailor expressed appreciation to the four major branches under the MWUN — the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Dockworkers, Seafarers, and Shipping branch — for their relentless service in advancing the maritime industry.
He also extended his gratitude to stakeholders in the maritime sector, noting that mutual respect and understanding have been instrumental in maintaining industrial peace and a cordial working relationship.
“For us to keep enjoying this harmony, we must continue to uphold our shared values. The welfare and remuneration of our workers must remain a top priority,” he added.
While noting the economic hardships, including high inflation and the rising cost of living, Bunu expressed hope that the Federal Government would soon intervene to alleviate the burdens on Nigerian workers.
He concluded by wishing all workers a happy and memorable May Day, stating that their sacrifices towards reviving the nation’s economy would not be in vain.
