MWUN President-General Bunu Congratulates Oyetola on Nigeria’s IMO Category C Victory

The Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has applauded the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Hon. Adegboyega Oyetola, for Nigeria’s successful election into the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Category C Council, describing the feat as a landmark achievement for the nation’s maritime sector.
In a congratulatory message issued by the union’s Head of Media, Comrade John Kennedy Ikemefuna, the President-General of MWUN, Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, said Oyetola’s leadership and strategic diplomatic engagements were instrumental in securing Nigeria’s return to the IMO Council.
Bunu stated that the minister had made the country proud by elevating Nigeria’s status among leading maritime nations through a vigorous inter-ministerial campaign that surpassed the country’s efforts in previous elections in 2011 and 2019. He noted that the achievement was made possible through hard work, commitment, and foresight.
The MWUN leader also commended the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, for his dedication and supportive role throughout the campaign process. According to him, Dantsoho’s contributions complemented the efforts of the minister and further strengthened Nigeria’s chances at the IMO.
Bunu emphasized that the synergy between the minister and heads of maritime regulatory agencies remains key to transforming the nation’s maritime sector. If such collaboration is sustained, he said, the industry would continue to achieve global recognition and growth.
He further praised Oyetola’s deep understanding of the marine and blue economy sector, adding that the minister has consistently exceeded expectations since assuming office.
With the IMO victory, Bunu said Nigeria has once again been positioned positively on the global maritime stage, raising the country’s profile and reaffirming its commitment to international maritime standards.
